I am withdrawing from my foreign account. My "Visa debit" has no Forex fees, so the exchange rate is better than XE Trade. I am charged a fee per transaction. Would it be possible to go to a teller and withdraw more than what the ATM gives me or will that incur new fees?

Yeah, it would be the same fee for withdrawing at a CIBC ATM and a CIBC teller from a CIBC account.

1) Your bank account / debit card's daily limits
2) The ATM's limit per transaction (they do this because they get more money if you do more transactions :P )

Most ATM's will be either 500 (ex: BMO) or 800 (TD I think)

So i use my capitalone360 card from the usa and allybank card from the usa to withdraw from ATMs. My max per day for capitalone360 is $1000 and allybank is $500. So i would withdraw $500 at bmo atms with no problems. However i prefer capitalone360 as oppose to ally because i dont have to pay a currnecy fee as oppose to ally... ally still is very cheap 1 percent.

I also withdrawn from rbc atm before and i think max is $400. So for someone who wants to withdraw the most that is possible for atm machine, is td bank the best option? I think its $800 max per td bank atm. Is that correct or false? I know it depends on your bank but my capitalone360 is $1000 max per day and when i do 1000, it has to be $500 each time at bmo. Does anyone know if i would be able to withdraw 800 max at a td bank atm with my card since my daily limits with capitalone360 is 1000 and not 500? My allybank card i could withdraw max 500 a day.

Assuming the ATM's limit per transaction is $800 (ex: TD in what I said above), then yes your CapitalOne360 would be able to withdraw $800. You would need to withdraw $200 in a separate transaction to use up your daily limit.

But since your Ally card has a low limit, then you can only withdraw $500.

Talk to your bank if you need a higher limit. MY RBC limit has been $1000 for quite some time now.

Canada, eh?

Bumping this old thread so I don’t have to start a new one.

Used a TD Debit card at a RBC ATM - ATM only allowed $400 max. But it suggested I could withdrawal more than 400 on a separate transaction.

At the end I paid $6 ($3x2) ATM fees to withdrawal 500.

Since this is not a TD account restriction seems like a scummy move from RBC to force you to pay twice.

Its actually TD that charged you for using a machine outside of their network.
RBC only charged you once.

So one charge from TD for using an outside machine.
One charge from RBC for the service of providing cash to a non-customer.

RodDog999 wrote: Yes, I can confirm that ATM's have physical limits imposed on them. However, if your limits are changed to allow for larger cash withdrawals, then you can still use it but in multiple transactions.

But why can't you go into a branch to make a larger withdrawal? Banks will be reluctant to raise your limit due to their exposure to fraud. The larger your daily limit, the greater the loss to a bank in e.g. a skimming incident. We just recently had a large scale skimming incident at work and if everyones limit had been higher, the FI would have lost a lot more money (our clients are protected in skimming incidents and we cover all losses). The daily withdrawal limit gave us enough time to cancel all affected limits.

Either way, the bank will want to know why you want to do this. To make these changes permanent, it often has to go through a higher up and they will look even more closely as to why you want to do this and why you need to withdraw large amounts of cash on a regular basis without coming into the branch. It will raise red flags left and right unless you have a very good reason.

Maybe he is a Simplii or Tangerine account holder.

No he's correct - RBC charged him twice as it made him do two separate transactions to take out $500. I have tried RBC ATMs before and indeed they do limit non-RBC clients from taking out more than $400 at a time. While RBC customers can withdraw a lot more in a single transaction. There's no physical limitation with the RBC ATM here.

In the past there was a limitation when ATMs would only dispense 20s - 40-50 notes at a time was all ATMs could dispense. Now with many machines having 100s, some banks will let you take out $5,000+ in a single transaction - I've done with it TD multiple times before even with a non-TD debit card.

Oh true. I misread.

I guess cash isn’t really king anymore. Seems very inconvenient.

Yeahhhh, $400 is just quite a low limit IMO given our cost of living these days.

Because I needed it right away and there was no TD ATM near by I didn't mind the $6 but from a principle standpoint i think its BS

If this was a TD account restriction, then it would be a different story, but clearly the machine can give more, RBC just chooses not to unless you cough up another fee.

There are two types of ATM withdrawal limits. The first is set by your bank, and usually includes a maximum amount per day and a maximum amount per week. The second type is a per transaction ATM withdrawal limit set by the ATM owner/operator, and is typically $500 per withdrawal. So even if your bank has a higher daily withdrawal limit, you likely will need to make more than one withdrawal.
