S.

Rep. Robert T. Stafford, Friday night, accused his opponent, of trying to run on false issues and refusing to discuss real problems facing Vermont and the nation. In the most biting attack of his campaign for re-election, Stafford told a group at the Wilmington Inn: My opponent refuses to say whether he would fight the Freeman farm plan, which would shackle the freedom and economy of our dairy fanners in Vermont. I have twice challenged him to state where he stands on this issue, and he has refused to discuss it.

Instead he says he would work for unification of milk orders for the Northeast and elimination of the nearby milk differential in prices. Well, he can do this by staying right in Pomfret because no congressional legislation is needed to bring this about. Our farmers can, by a two-third vote, do this themselves, and I am not about to order them to do so by legislation from Washington. My opponent also shows his complete lack of knowledge of government and budget matters by trying to make an issue of an action taken while I was governor to save the people of Vermont nearly $1,000,000 a year of new taxes. He accuses me of balancing the state budget by not paying a million dollars to the teachers and state employees retirement funds.

I would remind my opponent: that this action was taken to spread the payments into these funds over a longer period of time because of the healthy condition in which they were at the time. And this action was taken on the advice of the outside actuary handling these funds and with the full consent of the legal counsel for both the teachers and state employees, as well as the voted approval of the Vermont Legislature. My record as governor was before the people two years ago and I am gratified at toe vote of confidence given me. I am running on my record. as Congressman.

This record includes fighting against the Freeman Farm Plan, which my opponent will not discuss. It includes fighting for preservation of our National Guard and Reserve forces, another matter which my opponent will not discuss. It includes voting for measures to cl*t off plying Cuba with strategic materials, while my opponent at the same time was advising us publicly 'to walk softly and not carry a big stick. Thank goodness toe President did not take his advice. And my record in Congress includes fighting for balanced budgets and a sensible Approach to our economy, for while my opponent refuses to deny that he would be nothing but a rubber stamp and a yes-man for every big spending proposal dreamed up in Washington.

Stafford wound up a two-day tour of Windham County with his talk here Friday night. Thursday he was guest at a coffee hour in Townshend and toured toe communities of Londonderry, West Townshend, Windham, Saxtons River and Jamaica. Today, he spent the day in the Putney-Brat-tleboro area, visiting toe experiment in International Living, the Brattleboro Memorial Hospita and business areas in Brattleboro. A supper in Staffords honor was given at the Red Mill in Wilmington tonight, preceded by coffee hour at the Wilmington Inn. 12:00 gilililiililUiii .2:10 12:13 12:30 CIRCHINRD 8:45 9:00 NOW PLAYING i' BEST PICTURE KkmtiltOksimjAwvit SHOWING AT 2:00 I SAT.
