XXX Alliance forming to raise funds for Metro education Nonprofit group to provide extras to boost learning By DIANE LONG Staff Writer A quickened momentum in Metro education is sparking the formation of a new group to raise money for the extras that can boost student learning. The nonprofit Alliance for Public Education, now in the formation stages, will solicit donations of time or money from civic-minded people and corporations. "There's a rebirth in the community of more than just hope, but anticipation that a lot of good things will happen," said Nelson Andrews, chairman of the Mayor's Education Advisory Group and one of the alliance organizers. "A whole lot of people want to be a part of that, not just the big gurus so to speak, but sort of the public at large. We've had a tremendous effort and response from the mayor and the council to fund education, (but) even then, you need to provide some discretionary funds." Such alliances that supplement public money with private funds are springing up across the nation.

In Seattle, the 7-year-old Alliance for Education was one of the nation's earliest. The group applies for grants, accepts donations and helps pay for teacher and principal training, art and music programs in individual schools, Murfreesboro, TN FRESEN, Mrs. Ethel Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at Middle TN Medical Center. "This is the right thing to do if we're going to create a great school system here," said Rodney Wheeler, development and community relations director. "We get gifts of everything from $5 to a million dollars, from individuals and foundations and companies. We're really trying to create the habit of giving by everyone in the community." The Nashville THOMPSON alliance hasn't finalized its mis- THOMPSON sion, but it won't compete with existing groups that help public education, said 1 organizer Harvey Sperling, education program officer for the Frist Foundation. "I applaud PENCIL and the Public Education Foundation," Sperling said. "Our idea is separate and complementary.

I think there are people out there who believe deeply in the public education system and want to do everything possible to elevate it to the highest level." George Thompson, chairman of the Metro school board, agreed that extra money is always handy, even though Mayor Bill Purcell has already added $30 million to next year's schools budget. "There's still the need, even in light of the increased funding the mayor has provided," Thompson said. "There's definitely a place for private donors or private enterprise The alliance may be able to raise community enthusiasm to a higher pitch. "When you have a mayor and council fully committed to the success of the school system, and then a larger community that's also pulling together, you have all the elements that you need to create success," said Marc Hill, education assistant to the mayor. "This is a great way for people to plug in.

It creates community excitement and support. It's a way for everyGARCIA body to join the team." Schools Director Pedro gives the alliance idea a up. "It will allow us to go the mile and do things to really up kids faster," he said. "We have a number of tions, and we don't want to pete with them. We certainly want to send the message out that we have a bad budget.
