The Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and the city of Burlington worked together to create the first-in-the-city accessible tactile map located in Burlington’s waterfront park.
BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - If you’ve been to Burlington’s waterfront recently, you may have noticed a new map, designed for everyone.
The Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and the city of Burlington worked together to create the first-in-the-city accessible tactile map located in Burlington’s waterfront park.
The new sign translates visual cues as well as textures and Braille.
Officials with the Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired say this was something their clients desperately needed to feel more a part of the community.
And the Burlington Mayor says she’s hoping the city can add more signs like this to other areas.
“As the new Mayor of Burlington, equity is a really important core value that I hold,” Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak said. “I know the city has started some really good work in many areas. One of those places is really thinking about our public space. That includes largely our parks, making sure it’s a place where everyone feels welcome.”
The new map is located on the right of the Echo Center next to the bus stop.
